Measuring Tiny Yorkie Portions Accurately

Portion accuracy sounds fussy until you do the math for a small dog. When a Yorkie's whole day might be 150–220 kcal, being off by 15 kcal per meal, twice a day, is 30 kcal — potentially 15–20% more food than intended. Repeat that daily and it is a direct route to gradual weight gain.

The problem with measuring cups

A measuring cup gives you a volume, but what matters nutritionally is mass. How densely kibble packs into a cup depends on the size and shape of the pieces, how hard you shake or press, and even how full the bag is. Studies of owners scooping pet food have repeatedly found that cups produce inconsistent, often over-generous amounts — and the smaller the target portion, the bigger that error looms.

From calories to grams

Every complete food lists a calorie content statement, typically as kilocalories per kilogram. To find calories per gram, divide the kcal-per-kilogram figure by 1000. For example, a food at 3,600 kcal/kg is 3.6 kcal per gram. If your Yorkie's target is 180 kcal a day, that is 180 ÷ 3.6 = 50 grams of food per day, or 25 grams per meal for two meals.

1. Find your dog's daily calorie target (a starting estimate; see our 'how much' guide).
2. Read the food's kcal/kg from the label and divide by 1000 to get kcal per gram.
3. Divide the daily target by kcal per gram to get grams per day.
4. Split the grams across the day's meals and weigh each portion.

Why small dogs are least forgiving

The same 15 kcal overage barely registers for a 70 lb Labrador eating well over a thousand calories a day — it is roughly 1% of intake. For a 5 lb Yorkie it can be closer to 8–10% of the entire day. Small dogs have almost no margin for sloppy measuring, which is exactly why the cheap scale pays off.

Practical tips for consistency

• Keep the scale by the food bin so weighing becomes automatic.
• Use the tare function so the bowl's weight never sneaks into the total.
• Weigh, don't estimate, when you switch to a new food with a different calorie density.
• Re-check grams whenever you change foods, because kcal per gram varies a lot between products.

None of this replaces watching your dog. Weighing gets the portion consistent; body condition tells you whether that consistent portion is the right size. If your Yorkie is drifting heavier or lighter despite careful measuring, revisit the calorie target with your veterinarian.
