Editorial policy

This page explains how we research, write, and maintain everything on Yorkiefood — and how to tell us when we have got something wrong. Our aim is simple: every claim should be traceable to a source you can check.

Our evidence hierarchy

Not all sources are equal. When they disagree, we weight them in roughly this order, and we prefer the most authoritative source available for any given claim:

  • Regulatory bodies — the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) for pet-food labelling, nutritional adequacy, and safety.
  • Poison-control centres — the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) and the Pet Poison Helpline for toxicity and emergency guidance.
  • Veterinary manuals — the Merck Veterinary Manual for clinical detail on toxicoses, dosing thresholds, and disease.
  • Professional bodies — WSAVA (especially the Global Nutrition Guidelines) and AAHA for nutrition, body-condition scoring, and life-stage guidance.
  • Peer-reviewed research — primary veterinary and nutrition literature.
  • University extension programs — land-grant and veterinary-school outreach material.
  • USDA FoodData Central — for the nutrient composition of human foods (calories, macronutrients, fibre, sugars).

A manufacturer is cited only for verifiable facts about that maker's own product — for example, a stated calorie density or life-stage label — never as evidence that the product is good.

What we do not source from

Some places dominate search results but do not meet our bar, so we do not use them as evidence:

  • Affiliate blogs and “best of” roundups that exist to sell products.
  • Content farms and AI-spun articles with no identifiable sourcing.
  • Forums, social posts, and anecdotes presented as fact.
  • Any page that cannot show where its claims come from.

We may read these to understand what owners are asking, but we do not treat them as authoritative, and we do not repeat their claims without independent confirmation.

Editorial statuses

Content moves through defined stages so nothing is published before it is ready. Internally we track each page as one of:

  • Draft — being written; not visible to readers.
  • Needs review — drafted and awaiting an editorial check of sources and accuracy.
  • Approved — checked and cleared, ready to go live.
  • Published — live on the site with its sources shown.

Veterinary review

We are careful researchers, not veterinarians. Independent review by a credentialed veterinary professional is a standard we are working toward, and we will not pretend it has happened when it has not. When a page has been reviewed, we will name the reviewer and their credentials on that page. Until then, please read our content as well-sourced education and rely on your own vet for decisions about your dog. See our medical disclaimer.

Corrections policy

We would genuinely rather be corrected than be wrong. If you find an error — a misstatement, an outdated source, a broken link, or anything that reads as unsafe — please tell us through our contact page. We review every report, fix confirmed errors promptly, and note meaningful changes in the page's history so the record stays honest.
