Our calculators are estimates

Our calorie, portion, treat, and transition tools use standard formulas and published ranges to produce a reasonable starting point. They are estimates, not prescriptions. Real dogs vary with age, activity, metabolism, body condition, spay/neuter status, and health conditions, so use the numbers as a place to begin, watch your dog's body condition, and adjust with your vet's input.

Small dogs, small margins

Yorkshire Terriers are tiny, and that makes them sensitive to small errors. A portion that would be trivial for a big dog can be a meaningful over- or under-feed for a 5-pound Yorkie, and puppies and toy breeds can drop into dangerous low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) quickly if they miss meals or lose their appetite. When in doubt, err toward caution and call your vet sooner rather than later.

Signs that need prompt veterinary care

This is not a complete list, and you should always trust your instincts, but contact a veterinarian promptly if you notice:

  • Loss of appetite or refusing to eat, especially in a puppy or very small dog.
  • Weakness, wobbliness, collapse, or unusual lethargy.
  • Repeated vomiting.
  • Severe, persistent, or bloody diarrhea.
  • Any suspected toxin or ingestion of something that should not have been eaten.

Signs like tremors, seizures, difficulty breathing, a distended or painful belly, or sudden disorientation are always emergencies — do not wait.
