Calories per Cup, Can, and Tray Explained

If you only ever read one line on a dog food package, make it the calorie content statement. It is the number that lets you turn a feeding target into an actual portion, and it varies a lot between products — which is exactly why 'just feed a cup' is such unreliable advice.

Where to find the calorie numbers

Complete pet foods carry a calorie content statement, typically expressed as kilocalories per kilogram (kcal/kg) and often also as kcal per common household unit — per cup for dry food, or per can or tray for wet food. It is usually printed near the feeding directions or the guaranteed analysis.

• Dry food: look for kcal/kg and kcal/cup.
• Canned or tray food: look for kcal/kg and kcal per can or per tray.
• If only kcal/kg is given, divide by 1000 to get kcal per gram.

Why 'a cup' is a shaky unit

A cup is a measure of volume, but calories track with mass. Two kibbles can occupy the same cup while weighing — and therefore feeding — quite differently, depending on piece size, shape, and how the food packs down. Manufacturers assume a specific weight per cup when they print kcal/cup, and your scoop may not match it. For a big dog, a small mismatch barely matters. For a Yorkie eating a fraction of a cup, it can be a large share of the day.

Comparing two foods fairly

Calorie density lets you compare products honestly. A dense kibble at 4,000 kcal/kg (4.0 kcal/g) packs more calories into the same gram than a lighter one at 3,300 kcal/kg (3.3 kcal/g). When you switch between foods of different densities, the grams — and certainly the 'cups' — you feed must change, even if your dog's calorie needs haven't.

1. Read kcal/kg on each food and convert to kcal per gram.
2. Divide your dog's daily calorie target by kcal per gram for each food.
3. Compare the resulting grams per day so you're comparing calories, not scoops.

Putting it together

Find the calorie content statement, convert to kcal per gram, divide your dog's target by it, and weigh the result. It takes a minute and removes the biggest source of accidental over- or under-feeding for a small dog.
