How to Switch Your Yorkie's Food Safely

A dog's digestive system adjusts to a familiar food. Change it abruptly and you can trigger loose stools, gas, or a stomach upset — unpleasant for any dog and a bigger deal for a small one that has little room for fluid loss. A gradual transition gives the gut time to adapt.

A 7-day transition plan

This is a typical schedule. Some dogs need to go slower, and that is fine — the timeline serves the dog, not the calendar.

1. Days 1–2: about 75% old food, 25% new food.
2. Days 3–4: about 50% old food, 50% new food.
3. Days 5–6: about 25% old food, 75% new food.
4. Day 7 onward: 100% new food.

Mix the two foods together in the same bowl at each meal so the proportions shift smoothly rather than serving old food at one meal and new at the next. Keep the total daily calories about the same as before — you are changing the food, not the amount.

What to watch for

• Stool: firm and consistent is good; soft, loose, or mucus-covered stools suggest going slower.
• Appetite: eating normally is reassuring; refusing meals is a reason to pause and reassess.
• Energy and comfort: watch for gassiness, discomfort, or a dog that seems 'off.'
• Vomiting or persistent diarrhea: stop and consult your veterinarian rather than pushing on.

For sensitive dogs and puppies

Yorkies with a history of sensitive stomachs may need a 10–14 day transition rather than seven. Very young puppies have little reserve, so go gently and keep meals frequent. If you are switching because of a suspected food problem or a medical issue, involve your veterinarian rather than experimenting on your own.

When not to rush

There is rarely a good reason to switch a healthy dog's food overnight. Even if you run out of the old food, a short gap on the new food alone is usually less disruptive than most owners fear — but a planned, gradual change is gentler. Buy the new bag before the old one is empty so you always have both on hand.
