Helping a Picky Yorkie Eat

Yorkies have a reputation for being fussy, and some genuinely are choosy. But 'picky' and 'not feeling well' can look identical from the outside, and the difference matters a great deal. Before you treat fussiness as a behavior problem, make sure it isn't a medical one.

Rule out the physical causes first

• Dental disease and mouth pain are common in small breeds and make eating uncomfortable.
• Nausea from a range of causes can make food unappealing.
• Recent vaccines, medications, or stress can temporarily dampen appetite.
• A puppy that won't eat is urgent because of hypoglycemia risk — don't wait.

Once your dog is healthy: build a routine

Picky eating is often reinforced by the environment. Free-feeding — leaving food out all day — removes the hunger cue that makes meals appealing and makes it hard to notice when a dog stops eating. Structured meals usually help.

1. Offer measured meals at set times, twice a day for most adults.
2. Leave the food down for 10–15 minutes, then pick it up if untouched.
3. Offer again at the next scheduled meal — a healthy dog will get hungry.
4. Keep treats small and few so they don't spoil the appetite for meals.

Make the food more appealing

• Gently warm food to just above room temperature to release aroma (never hot — test it first).
• Add a small amount of warm water to dry food to soften it and boost the smell.
• Try mixing in a spoon of a complete wet food as a topper, counting it toward daily calories.
• Serve in a clean, shallow dish; some small dogs dislike deep or noisy bowls.

Toppers without unbalancing the diet

Small amounts of appropriate toppers — a little complete wet food, a bit of plain cooked lean protein, or a splash of unsalted broth without onion or garlic — can encourage eating. Keep extras within the treat budget so the complete-and-balanced base still makes up the bulk of the diet, and avoid anything on the toxic list.

When picky truly means vet

See your veterinarian if appetite loss is sudden or complete, if it lasts more than a day (much sooner for puppies and tiny dogs), if it comes with other signs of illness, or if your dog is losing weight.
