A stuffable toy is a hollow rubber shape you pack with something soft - a little wet food, plain yogurt, xylitol-free peanut butter, some of the day's kibble mixed with a spoon of topper. The dog licks and works at it, and a small amount of food lasts far longer than it would in a bowl.
Of all the enrichment categories, this is the one most worth having for a Yorkie. It's cheap, it's durable, it survives the dishwasher, and it turns a portion you were feeding anyway into ten minutes of quiet occupation. That said, it still isn't a necessity - a dog who gets walks and company does fine without one.
For a two-to-seven-pound dog, size is the entire question. The classic red rubber toys everyone recognises come in sizes built for dogs many times a Yorkie's weight, and the wrong one is simply an object your dog can't get anything out of.
What actually matters for a Yorkie
Sized for a toy breed, not just 'small'
Check the maker's weight range rather than the word on the packet. Plenty of toys labelled small are aimed at 20-pound dogs. A Yorkie needs the smallest size in the range, with an opening a tiny muzzle and tongue can get into.
Soft, forgiving rubber
Toy breeds have famously delicate teeth. The hardest black rubber compounds are made for powerful chewers and are far more than a Yorkie's jaw needs - a softer, more pliable version is kinder and just as effective.
A small chamber
A toy that holds a big scoop of food is a problem, not a feature. You want something that takes a spoonful, because whatever you pack in there has to come out of the day's ration.
Cleanable inside
Wet food dries into a hollow toy and turns sour fast. Look for dishwasher-safe rubber and a shape you can get a brush into - the narrow-necked designs are the ones that end up smelling.
One solid piece
No glued caps, no separate rope, no squeaker that a determined little dog can work loose. A single moulded piece has nothing to come off and be swallowed.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying a size up so it 'lasts longer' - a toy too big or too firm just gets abandoned, and your dog learns it isn't worth trying.
- Adding food on top of full meals. Stuff the toy with part of the meal, not extra, or a couple of enrichment sessions a day quietly overfeeds a five-pound dog.
- Packing it with anything unsafe. Never xylitol-sweetened peanut butter, and check any nut butter's label every time - formulations change.
- Leaving a toy out for days between washes, or leaving a chewer unsupervised with one that's started to split.
