    A fountain lives in your kitchen and runs all day. A pump that hums or gurgles when the water level drops will annoy you into unplugging it, and a nervous Yorkie may avoid it entirely.

  2. A low drinking level

    Many fountains are built around a raised spout or a tall tower. A Yorkie stands a few inches off the floor, so the water needs to be reachable without stretching up or perching on the base.

  3. Easy to strip down and scrub

    This is the part people underestimate. A fountain needs proper weekly cleaning - pump included - or it grows a slimy film. Fewer parts, wide openings, and dishwasher-safe pieces make the difference between a clean fountain and an abandoned one.

  4. Sensible capacity for one small dog

    A Yorkie drinks very little, so a large reservoir just means water sitting around for days. A smaller capacity you refill often is fresher than a big tank you top up.

  5. Filters you can actually get

    Replacement filters are an ongoing cost and a recurring errand. Check they're widely available and reasonably priced before you commit to the system.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying one for a dog who drinks fine already - a clean bowl does the same job with none of the maintenance.
