Sweet Potato Mash Topper

Ingredients

• 1 smallSweet potatoWashed and scrubbed; cook plain with no oil, salt, butter, or seasoning.
• A splashWaterPlain water only, to loosen the mash if needed.

Steps

1. Scrub the sweet potato, peel it, and cut it into chunks.
2. Steam or boil the chunks in plain water until soft when pierced with a fork, about 15 minutes.
3. Drain, then mash the sweet potato smooth, adding a splash of plain water if it is too thick.
4. Let the mash cool completely to room temperature.
5. Stir a teaspoon into your Yorkie's regular complete meal and refrigerate the rest.

Storage

Refrigerate the mash in an airtight container for up to 4 days, or freeze in small teaspoon-sized portions for up to 2 months.

Portion guidance

For a 4-7 lb Yorkie, a teaspoon of mash stirred into the regular meal is enough. It counts toward the ~10% daily treat budget, so trim the base meal slightly on days you add it. Start with a small amount the first time to make sure it agrees with your dog.
