Vegetables

Crunchy, low-calorie treats and toppers — plus a few in the allium family to keep well away.

All vegetables we’ve checked

Asparagus

Safe if prepared right

Yes — asparagus cooked soft and cut into small pieces is safe for Yorkies; tough raw stalks are a choking risk, so skip those.

Beets

Only small amounts

In small amounts — plain cooked beets are safe for Yorkies now and then, but sugar and oxalates mean they're a limited treat, and pickled beets are too salty.

Bell Peppers

Generally safe

Yes — plain bell pepper with the seeds and stem removed and cut into small pieces is a crunchy, vitamin-rich treat for Yorkies.

Broccoli

Only small amounts

In small amounts, yes — a little plain broccoli is safe, but larger amounts can upset a Yorkie's stomach, so keep it under about 10% of the diet.

Brussels sprouts

Safe if prepared right

Yes — plain, cooked Brussels sprouts in small amounts are safe for Yorkies, but they're known for causing gas, so keep the portion modest.

Butternut squash

Generally safe

Yes — plain cooked, deseeded butternut squash is a gentle, dog-friendly veg for Yorkies, much like pumpkin.

Cabbage

Safe if prepared right

Yes — plain, cooked cabbage in small amounts is safe for Yorkies, though it can cause gas, so keep the portion modest.

Carrots

Generally safe

Yes — carrots are a low-calorie, crunchy treat most Yorkies enjoy, as long as you cut them small enough to avoid choking.

Cauliflower

Safe if prepared right

Yes — plain, cooked cauliflower cut into small florets is safe for Yorkies in modest amounts, though it can cause a bit of gas.

Celery

Generally safe

Yes — plain celery is a safe, low-calorie, crunchy treat for a Yorkie, cut into small pieces.

Chips (Crisps)

Best avoided

Avoid. Chips — potato crisps — are high in salt and fat and are frequently flavoured with onion or garlic powder. They're a poor snack for a Yorkie, and flavoured varieties carry a real toxicity concern.

Corn

Only small amounts

In small amounts — plain corn kernels off the cob are fine for a Yorkie, but never let a dog have the cob itself.

Cucumber

Generally safe

Yes — cucumber is a very low-calorie, hydrating, crunchy treat, as long as you cut it into small pieces to prevent choking.

Edamame

Only small amounts

In small amounts — plain, shelled, cooked edamame with no salt is safe for Yorkies as an occasional treat, but skip the salty pods and don't make it a regular food.

French Fries

Best avoided

Best avoided. A dropped fry won't poison a Yorkie, but chips are deep-fried, heavily salted, and often seasoned with garlic or onion — a poor fit for a five-pound dog even though they aren't toxic.

Green Beans

Generally safe

Yes — plain green beans are a safe, low-calorie treat and a popular filler for dogs watching their weight.

Kale

Safe if prepared right

Yes — small amounts of plain, cooked kale are safe for most Yorkies, though this leafy green is best kept to a modest, occasional treat.

Lettuce

Generally safe

Yes — plain, washed, finely chopped lettuce is a safe, hydrating, low-calorie nibble for Yorkies.

Mushrooms

Use caution

Use caution. Plain store-bought button mushrooms are low-risk but offer a Yorkie nothing worth the trouble, while wild mushrooms can be deadly and are very hard to identify — that is the danger that matters.

Onions & Garlic

Toxic — do not feed

No. Onions, garlic, leeks, and chives (the allium family) damage a dog's red blood cells and can cause anaemia. Powders and cooked forms count too.

Peas

Generally safe

Yes — plain peas are a safe, low-calorie treat for a Yorkie, served in small amounts with no added salt.

Pickles

Best avoided

Avoid. A plain cucumber is fine, but a pickle is a cucumber soaked in very salty brine and usually flavoured with garlic, dill, and onion. That brine is the problem for a five-pound Yorkie, and pickles offer nothing your dog needs.

Potato

Safe if prepared right

Yes, if cooked plain — a little plain cooked potato is fine for a Yorkie, but never raw or green potato.

Pumpkin

Generally safe

Yes — plain cooked or 100% canned pumpkin (not pie filling) is a gentle, fibre-rich food often used to settle mild digestive upset.

Spinach

Only small amounts

In small amounts — a little plain spinach is fine for a Yorkie, but keep it occasional because of its oxalates.

Tomato

Use caution

Use caution. A little ripe red tomato flesh is generally fine for most dogs, but green or unripe tomatoes and the plant's stems and leaves contain solanine and tomatine, and tomato-based sauces usually carry onion, garlic, and salt.

Zucchini

Generally safe

Yes — plain zucchini is a safe, low-calorie treat for a Yorkie, cut into small pieces.
