Drinks & Other

Things that never belong in a Yorkie's bowl: alcohol, caffeine, and the household sources owners overlook.

All drinks & other we’ve checked

Alcohol

Toxic — do not feed

No. Alcohol is toxic to dogs, and a Yorkie's tiny body needs only a very small amount to become dangerously intoxicated. This includes spilled drinks, hand sanitiser, and raw bread dough.

Barbecue Sauce

Best avoided

No. Barbecue sauce is loaded with sugar and salt and usually made with onion and garlic powder — all bad news for a tiny Yorkie.

Caffeine

Toxic — do not feed

No. Caffeine is toxic to dogs. It is the same family of compound that makes chocolate dangerous, and a Yorkie's small body reaches a harmful dose from a surprisingly small amount.

Cocoa Powder

Toxic — do not feed

No. Cocoa powder is one of the most dangerous forms of chocolate for dogs because it's so concentrated. For a Yorkie, even a small spill can be a real emergency.

Gravy

Best avoided

No. Gravy is very salty and fatty and is usually made with onion — a poor and risky choice for a tiny Yorkie.

Honey

Only small amounts

In tiny amounts — a small dab of honey isn't toxic to healthy adult Yorkies, but it's pure sugar, so keep it to a rare lick and skip it for puppies and diabetic dogs.

Ketchup

Use caution

Best avoided. Plain ketchup isn't usually toxic, but it's salty, sugary, and often contains onion and garlic powder — so a stray lick is fine, but don't serve it.

Mayonnaise

Use caution

Not a good idea. Mayonnaise isn't toxic, but it's almost entirely oil and fat — far too rich for a tiny Yorkie, so at most a rare tiny lick.

Peppermint Candy

Use caution

Use caution — and read the label first. Sugary peppermint sweets are empty calories and a choking risk, but the critical danger is that many sugar-free mints contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs even in tiny amounts.

Ranch Dressing

Best avoided

No. Ranch dressing is made with garlic and onion powder plus a lot of fat and salt — a genuinely bad combination for a tiny Yorkie.

Soy Sauce

Best avoided

Best avoided. Soy sauce is extremely high in salt, and for a dog as small as a Yorkie even a small amount is a genuine sodium concern — this is one to keep well out of reach.

Sugar-Free Gum

Toxic — do not feed

No. Most sugar-free gum contains xylitol, which is extremely dangerous to dogs. For a Yorkie, even a single piece can be life-threatening, and it acts within minutes.
